The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) has elected Patti Valkenburg as a new member. The Academy has about 250 members (out of about 25.000 Dutch scholars) and has functioned as a society of top academics since 1808. Members are chosen on the basis of sustained high-quality academic achievements. Membership is for life. When an Academy member reaches the age of 65, he or she must make way for a new member.
The KNAW advises the government on developments in science and scholarship, promotes national and international academic cooperation, is active in assessing the quality of academic research and is responsible for 18 internationally-renowned research institutes.
Members of the KNAW meet to share knowledge and debate science policy and other issues of interest to science, scholarship and society. Together they represent a broad spectrum of academic disciplines and are active on boards and committees of the Academy.
