Hans Beentjes (Ph.D., Leiden University 1990) is a professor of Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. He is involved in research in many areas, including the role of media in the lives of young people. In his dissertation he compared children’s reading and television viewing. Presently, he is involved in research on young people’s use of news media, media and children in Indonesia, and apps for young children. He is scientific advisor of Sesamstraat, the Dutch version of Sesame Street (http://www.nps.nl/nps/sesamstraat/), and member of the scientific committee of Kijkwijzer, the Dutch classification system that is used to attach age and content ratings to films and television programs (www.kijkwijzer.nl).
