Sindy Sumter is an assistant professor in the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR). Her research focuses broadly on the link between youth’s online experiences and social emotional development. In the last years, she studied negative online experiences among children and adolescents, specifically online peer victimization. This research was conducted as part of the project "Empowering and Protecting Children and Adolescents against Cyberbullying (2010-2013)” which was funded through NWO’s new thematic programme Responsible Innovation and carried out in collaboration with Prof. Simone van der Hof (eLaw, Leiden University).
During her PhD (2010, Developmental Psychology, Leiden University) she investigated normative development during adolescence in relation to social evaluative fears. She focused on the psychosocial and emotional correlates of social evaluative fears by investigating both changes in subjective as well as physiological responses to public speaking.
