Dr. Amber van der Wal Awarded NWO Veni Grant

We are happy to share that Amber van der Waal has been awarded a Veni grant for the project “Turning Algorithms for Good: Using Humor to Protect Youth from Harmful Social Media Content.”

Social media algorithms often amplify appearance-focused content, which can harm the self-esteem and well-being of young people. Amber’s project offers an innovative solution by injecting positive, non-appearance-focused content, particularly humour, into feeds. By testing this approach on TikTok, the project aims to reduce harmful comparisons and promote healthier online environments for young people.
