The Interaction Design and Children (IDC) Conference was held from June 17-20, 2024 in Delft – back in the Netherlands where it all began in 2002. This annual event brought together a diverse group of researchers, practitioners, and educators from around the globe, all passionate about advancing the field of Child-Computer Interaction (CCI).

As a first-time attendee at IDC24, I was fascinated by the wealth of knowledge and inspiration. The conference sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities have provided me with a plethora of ideas for future research. One of the key takeaways for me was the emphasis on ethnographic research methods and participatory designs. These approaches, which prioritize understanding and actively involving children in the design process, are high on my list to explore further. The sessions on these topics highlighted the importance of creating technology that truly resonates with children's needs and environments, designed with and for them. For example, I was particularly intrigued by research on the use of sensors in children's toys to help connect family members separated by distance. This innovative approach not only enhances play but also fosters family bonds, demonstrating the profound impact of thoughtful design in children's technology.

Many important lessons were shared, but one stood out to me: the need for sustainable exit strategies. When we enter spaces of children for participatory workshops, we often time do not think enough about what happens when these projects end. What do we leave children with afterwards? It was a good reminder that we carry ethical responsibility to consider the long-term effects of our research on the children involved.
