March 2011. On March 23, 2011, Esther Rozendaal has succesfully defended her PhD thesis 'Advertising literacy & children's suspectibility to advertising'. The committee was impressed with the clear and inspirational writing style and the way Rozendaal has exposed widespread assumptions and presented a more nuanced view on advertising literacy.
The dissertation consists of 5 articles on advertising literacy (i.e., advertising-related knowledge, such as understanding advertising’s commercial intent) and children’s susceptibility to advertising. The dissertation shows that to help children defend themselves against advertising, increasing their advertising literacy (for example through educational programs) is not enough. They should also get assistance with using this literacy as a critical defense mechanism.
